Airfix Catalogue description:Although better known as a daylight heavy bomber in USAAF service, the Boeing B-17 (called Boeing Fortress Mk.III in RAF service) also served in a far more secretive role during the latter stages of the Second World War. In the dead of night, B-17s were flown by the RAF's secret 100 Group, operated by 223 and 214 Squadrons. The job of these nocturnal Boeings was to mingle with the bomber stream and using an electronic warfare system known as 'Airborne Cigar' (ABC) attempt to jam German ground controller braodcasts so that the Luftwaffe night fighters could not find and intercept the bombers.
