Quick Weathering Tip

Giving your models a realistic 'weathered' appearance is easy. Start by rubbing an artists' pastel pencil (appropriately coloured) onto a piece of sandpaper, then brush the dry powder onto the model with a stiff brush.

For best results, this technique should be applied last, after any coat of Humbrol Modelcote varnish you have applied, to cover the paint scheme and decals in the areas you wish to 'weather'.

James May's 1:1 Scale Airfix Spitfire by Daniel Parish

Last night (27th October) saw the first episode of James May's new series "Toy Stories". The opening show covered Airfix and was excellent and a great shout for Airfix.

In the show James introduces Airfix kits to a class off very disinterested kids, by the end some of them were new modelers. They successfully build a 1:1 scale Spitfire complete with a pilot molded in James's image.

Inspired by James’s exploits, the book covers both the stories behind a number of classic toys and the adventures in summer 2009 as James and his helpers, children and adults of all ages, build and recreate a range of toys in a series of Top Gear style escapades.

Hornby brands feature in three of the ambitious projects, as James enlists the help of volunteers and schoolchildren to help him build a 1:1 scale Airfix kit of a Supermarine Spitfire Mk I; creates the world’s longest Scalextric track at the historic Brooklands motor-racing circuit in Surrey and runs a Hornby train along a 10-mile stretch of track from Barnstaple to Bideford.

Each chapter includes details of how the projects were constructed, with diagrams, illustrations and informal photography taken during the filming. The book also features a history of the toys themselves, from their early British roots to their international appeal today. Toy Stories also offers a range of simple but fun projects linked to these toys to carry out in your own home, accompanied by step-by-step instructions, illustrations and diagrams. Also, available is the James May's Toy Stories [DVD] [2009].
